Ikat is a resist dyeing technique where the threads used for weaving are dyed beforehand. The Ikat threads are bound in a pattern so that the threads covered by the binding 'resist' the dye, creating a design. The more binding done before weaving, the more complicated the pattern.
A summer weight dressmaking cotton. Suitable for dresses, tops, shirts, and looser fitting trousers or shorts.
Pattern suggestions: The Tea House Top & Dress, The Wildwood Wrap Dress, Ellis & Hattie, The Dress Shirt, The Trapeze, The Camber Set, The Factory, The Skipper. From the Merchant & Mills Workbook the Bantam and Heron.
Approx. 120-150gsm (light weight)
For the first couple of washes, place the fabric in the washing machine drum at 30 or 40 degrees with a handful of table salt. This will help fix the dye to prevent it running. Do not tumble. Please allow for a shrinkage of 3-5%.
Ikat cloths are prone to slubs and often have ties in the cloth where one weaver ends and another begins, the ties will be on the wrong side of the cloth. As Indian cloths are handmade, sometimes susceptible to irregularities in the weave or print, this is all part of their charm and are not classed as flaws.
We try our best to give an accurate representation of our fabrics, however due to varying monitor settings the colours may differ slightly to the original fabric. If you want to be sure about the colour, weight or size of a design please order a sample.
Our fabric is sold per 25cm (¼ metre). If you would like to purchase one metre of fabric please enter 4 units. When purchasing multiple units, the fabric will be cut continuously.
